It is the monomeric subunit of microfilaments, one of the three major components of the cytoskeleton, and of thin filaments which are part of the contractile apparatus in muscle cells. It is the most abundant protein in the typical eukaryotic cell, accounting for about 15% in some cell types. The protein is highly conserved, and forms a huge variety of structure in cells in concert with a huge numbers of actin binding proteins. The actin filaments interact with myosin to produce a sliding effect, which is the basis of muscular contraction and many aspects of cell motility, including cytokinesis.

The individual subunits of actin are known as globular actin (G-actin) that assembles into long filamentous polymers called F-actin. Two parallel F-actin strands twist around each other in a helical formation, giving rise to microfilaments of the cytoskeleton. Microfilaments measure approximately 7 nm in diameter with a loop of the helix repeating every 37nm. Each actin protomer binds one molecule of ATP and has one high affinity site for either calcium or magnesium ions, as well as several low affinity sites. It exists as a monomer in low salt concentrations, but filaments form rapidly as salt concentration rises, with the consequent hydrolysis of ATP. Actin from many sources forms a tight complex with deoxyribonuclease (DNase I) although the significance of this is still unknown. The formation of this complex results in the inhibition of DNase I activity, and actin loses its ability to polymerise. It has been shown that an ATPase domain of actin shares similarity with ATPase domains of hexokinase and hsp70 proteins. In vertebrates there are three groups of actin isoforms: alpha, beta and gamma. The alpha actins are found in muscle tissues and are a major constituent of the contractile apparatus. The beta and gamma actins co-exist in most cell types as components of the cytoskeleton and as mediators of internal cell motility. MreB, a major component of the bacterial cytoskeleton, exhibits high structural homology to its eukaryotic counterpart actin. Further it has been suggested that members of the Rho family of small guanosine triphosphatases have emerged as key regulators of the actin cytoskeleton, and through their interaction with multiple target proteins, they ensure coordinated control of other cellular activities such as gene transcription and adhesion.

Reference:
1. Submit. Give up. Make room for the miracle.

2. Inform yourself. Listen to your intuition. Examine all the options, but only use what feels right to you.

3. Accept support. Surround yourself with loving friends, healing music, special colors, prayer and affirmation. Create a ceremony of healing/wholing and invite your supporters.

4. Anoint your breast(s) with healing herbal oils such as calendula, dandelion, or poke. Visualize healing energies suffusing your tissues.

1.

2. Maximize the healthy qualities of your diet:

* Use organic olive oil and butter to the exclusion of other fats.

* Increase your use of beans, especially lentils, and fermented foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, miso, tamari, homemade wines and beers.

* Include immune building and anticancer herbs in your diet:

o Daily use of a nourishing infusion, especially red clover flower or burdock root or violet leaf infusions.
o Daily use of fresh herb vinegars, especially yellow dock, burdock, and dandelion root vinegars.
o Frequent use of a long-cooked soup containing seaweed (such as kombu or wakame), astragalus root, and medicinal mushrooms (reishi, shiitake, puffballs, etc).

3. Increase you exercise level. Take a yoga or tai chi class weekly. Walk daily. Get a weekly massage. Pamper yourself with activity.

4. Use drugs (chemotherapy, tamoxifen, anesthesia, pain killers) as required but:

* consider a short trial of a powerful herb such as poke root before resorting to drugs; and
* always combine drug use with complementary herbs. For instance, protect the liver with milk thistle seed tincture.

5. Use radiation and surgery as needed but:

* always combine with complementary herbs; and
* be willing to set limits that you feel comfortable with - they can't take your lymph glands if you say "No."

For more information, see Breast Cancer? What are the weapons being heralded? Drugs, research, tests and exams. They miss the point.

“Prevention” is promoted as meaning catching the disease early. Really. That also misses the point. Is it “prevention” if you call 911 when you come home and see smoke billowing from all your windows? Do we just live with a carpe diem philosophy and wait for the doctor to tell us we have a lump in our breast or a swollen nodular prostate? Is the cause of cancer a lack of one of the new cancer drugs? Is the cause of cancer really unknown, requiring endless research?

First, let me put to rest the propaganda that the war is being won. Since President Nixon declared the war (1971) and after over 200 billion dollars have been spent on research (remember, one billion is a thousand million), more Americans will die of cancer in the next 14 months than have died in all U.S. wars ever fought combined! (Where are the protest marches?) Soon, cancer will overtake heart disease as the number one killer.

Decades ago, early in the war, there were some dramatic successes such as with Hodgkin's disease and some forms of childhood leukemia. There can be little doubt that debunking (surgical removal) of large cancers brings benefits. But the big killers such as colorectal, lung, prostate and breast cancer remain as threatening as ever. Survival gains are measured primarily in additional months (not years) added to life, not in cures. The placebo effect is by and large ignored. (People getting a sugar pill placebo in cancer studies have been known to lose their hair and some actually cure themselves by simply thinking they will be cured.) A percentage of people can experience remissions spontaneously and from simple lifestyle adjustments, but the cancer therapy is always credited with the cure.

Investigations
"Placebo Learning: The Placebo Effect as a Conditioned Response," 1985; 2(1):23.
O'Regan B, et al. 1993. Spontaneous Remission: An Annotated Bibliography. Sausalito, CA.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0943951178/103-3301155-6416668?v=glance

Talbot M. 1991. The Holographic Universe. New York. Harper Collins Publishers
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060922583/103-3301155-6416668?v=glance

Townsend Letter, 2004; 251:32-3 http://www.townsendletter.com/June2004/June2004.htm

Statistics can always be massaged to create the result desired. This practice is rampant in cancer research. Animal models (euphemism for real living and feeling caged creatures being tortured by the millions) do not prove effectiveness across species boundaries to humans. Neither do laboratory cell lines. That's why all the "breakthroughs" based on tumor shrinkage never pan out. For-profit drug companies and National Cancer Institute grant-based research ignore metastases (the spreading cells of cancer through the body) in their positive reports. Instead they highlight and focus on more easily obtained lab results, such as "tumor shrinkage,” and on easily manipulated clinical data such as "five-year survival."

Twelve new "improved" drugs introduced in Europe between 1995 and 2000 were no better than the drugs they replaced. But the prices were all higher, in one instance by a factor of 350 times. One new "revolutionary" drug, Erbituxâ„¢, found to "shrink" tumors but not extend the lives of patients at all costs $2,400 per week. Avastinâ„¢, another costly chemotherapeutic, by the best calculation, extended the lives of 400 colorectal patients by 4.7 months. Tamoxifinâ„¢ is proven to be effective in decreasing breast cancer. Risk is decreased by about 15% but what is not equally heralded is the fact that it increased the risk of endometrial uterine cancer by about 15%. (Patient Information: Nolvadex, Zeneca Pharmaceuticals)

Are such results worth the financial devastation and miserable life that chemotherapy, radiation and surgery impose? Is that the way to spend one's remaining days? If such therapy does add a couple of months, are those couple of months really worth the poking, prodding, pain, unrelenting nausea, disfiguring, destruction of the immune system and increased susceptibility to other diseases? "Yes" would be a hard answer to justify.

In the face of a cancer diagnosis most people just throw up their hands in terror and surrender to the conventional cancer therapy death process. The feeling is that something must be done, and, since "doctors know best," one must begin the "fight" by following the advice of the doctor. But fighting does not mean surrendering to the will of another person who has their own personal agenda and narrowed field of view dictated by the club they belong to. That misses the point. You must do something.

Here's the on-point best approach:
1. Prevention means adjusting your life right now so that you are living in tune with your design. Cancer is, quite simply, the reaction of cells subjected long enough to an environment they are not designed for. The genetic apparatus loses its bearings, becomes insane, if you will, and regresses to embryonic infancy and just begins multiplying recklessly. What is the proper environment? It is that food, air, water and lifestyle you are genetically designed for. The proper healthy preventive living context is encapsulated in the Wysong Optimal Health Programâ„¢.

2. If you get cancer, don't panic. First thing is follow #1 advice. Learn. Gather as much information as you can from all resources, not just what the medical establishment provides. We try to gather such information for you in:

The Wysong Directory of Alternative Resources http://www.wysong.net/page/WOTTPWS/PROD/EDUAIDS/MM028

3. Think about what has happened in your life that has caused the disease. It is caused, it does not just happen. Correct your life.

4. You take control of your own body and you make the decisions. Determine to set right what is wrong and do it. Taking control is essential to not feeling like a helpless victim and sinking into hopeless despair – a sure mindset to speed the disease along.

5. Think long and hard before submitting to unproven cancer therapies. If the doctor cannot prove effectiveness (at least prove that you will be better off with the therapy than without) and if you are not willing to take the risk of all the contraindications, then don't submit because you think it is "all that can be done." It isn't. See #2 above.

All good things in life are hard. In our modern world, good health takes effort and attention. Preventing and reversing disease also takes effort – your effort. Begin today to take charge of your health and be the best you can be. Most chronic degenerative diseases have long latency periods, the time between when the disease begins and it manifests in overt symptoms. Most everyone reading this has such disease brewing within at this very moment. So take advantage of the window of opportunity and give your body a chance by living the life you were designed to live. That will not only prevent disease from gaining a foothold, but reverse disease that is incubating within.

Dr. Wysong is a former veterinary clinician and surgeon, college instructor in human anatomy, physiology and the origin of life, inventor of numerous medical, surgical, nutritional, athletic and fitness products and devices, research director for the present company by his name and founder of the philanthropic Wysong Institute. It is usually done at the time of nose surgery. Aesthetic chin surgery uses implants of various shapes and sizes made out of solid and/or semi solid materials. It can give dramatic results in overall face enhancement.

The Need for Aesthetic Chin Surgery
Though chin implants do not solve all the chin problems, they can help to reshape a patient's face dramatically. Its role in facial reconstruction cosmetic surgery is vital, though for aesthetic purposes chin implants are mainly performed to create a more symmetrical face or aid in lessening an uncorrected orthodontic under bite.

Chin implants can have wonderful effects on a patients self esteem, but will not produce perfect results as each patient is different. Chin implants are most often used to bring a face into balance, so the procedure will not correct the entire face and make a patient perfect, but it will help to even out disproportional features.

Suitable Candidates for Chin Implant Surgery
Candidates with good general health and having realistic expectations from the cosmetic surgery are the best ones for chin implant surgery. Before cosmetic chin surgery, the surgeon needs to be informed about the candidats medical conditions. Patients who smoke may be advised to quit prior to the chin implants as healing may be delayed due to the smoking habit. If the patient has a history of dental problems, that may also factor into their candidacy for chin implants.
Chin Implant Surgery - Procedure
Chin implant surgery needs similar surgical conditions that are required for cheek implants surgery. The implant can be done in a surgical office, surgical center, or in a hospital, depending on the patient’s case. In some cases, the patient may need to stay overnight at a hospital for observation depending on the outcome of the chin implant procedure. Anesthesia for chin implants also depends on the case. Sometimes a local anesthetic can be given along with sedation—the patient will be awake but relaxed, and will not experience pain. In some cases, the patient and surgeon may opt for general anesthesia. Anesthesia alone can carry its own risks and should be discussed with the surgeon prior to the chin implant surgery.

Most often, an incision is made inside the lower lip, or under the chin. An implant of the desired size and shape is then placed inside the chin. If the incision is inside the mouth, it is closed with sutures (stitches) that later dissolve. If the incision is under the chin, removable sutures are usually used. At the end of the surgery, the chin is often taped to minimize swelling. The procedure typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes.
Chin Surgery Complications
Like cheek implants, chin implants do carry some potential complications, though rare. So it is better for the patients receiving chin implants to consult with the surgeon thoroughly. Chin implants carry the possibility of the shifting of the implant. If this occurs, a second chin operation may be necessary to adjust the chin implants position. Infection is always a concern with a surgical procedure and may occur with chin implants. Antibiotics can control infection should it happen. Certain chin implants may cause other risks and will need to be discussed with a surgeon. Some of the chin implants are made of silicone, and some patients may have a reaction to it, although there isn’t much scientific evidence that supports this claim.

Brad Jones specializes in aesthetic chin surgery. It is major invasive surgery, which removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. It also tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall.

The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. However, it also produces a permanent large scar, which can extend from hip to hip, depending upon the extent of the procedure. If you are considering abdominoplasty, this article will give you a basic understanding of when it can help, whom it can help, how it is performed, and results you can expect.

IS THIS PROCEDURE RIGHT FOR ME?

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are emotionally stable men and women who are in relatively good shape, close to their ideal body weight, and who have good overall skin elasticity, but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise.

The surgery is particularly helpful to women who have lost elasticity in the muscles and skin of the abdomen due to multiple pregnancies. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients because of weight loss can also be improved. Abdominoplasty is not a "one size fits all" procedure; it is unique for each patient. Much depends upon the joint decisions made by the patient and his or her surgeon.

Patients who plan to lose a lot of weight should postpone surgery until after they have achieved their desired weight. Young women who plan future pregnancies should also wait, since vertical muscles in the abdomen, which are tightened during surgery, can separate during pregnancy.

If you have heavy scarring from previous abdominal surgeries, your doctor may advise against an abdominoplasty because of the possibility of unusually prominent scars.

COST CONSIDERATIONS

An abdominoplasty is an expensive surgery. The average cost ranges from $5,000 to $9,000. In addition to the cost of abdominoplasty, a liposuction might require an additional $2,700, or more.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery's 2005 Procedural Census, 32.4% of all member surgeons have performed abdominoplasties. The "tummy-tuck" lies near the middle of popular plastic surgery procedures; since liposuction is number one that would make the abdominoplasty procedure near the top in popularity when it is combined with liposuction.

WHAT RISKS ARE INVOLVED?

When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, one trained in body contouring, the results are normally more than satisfactory. However, as with all surgical procedures, there are some risks associated with abdominoplasty. There are also specific complications associated with the procedure. These include: infection, blood clots, and poor healing, which can result in heavy scarring. Infection can be treated with antibiotics and drainage. The risk of blood clots can be minimized by moving around as soon after surgery as is possible. Poor healing and scarring may require additional surgery.

Smoking can increase the risk of complications and hinder healing. By following your surgeon's instructions carefully before and after surgery, you can significantly reduce your risk of complications.

FINDING THE RIGHT SURGEON

Before electing to have abdominoplasty you must find a qualified surgeon. One who is board certified. Be wary of any doctor who identifies him or herself as simply "board certified." All certification boards are not the same; you need to understand exactly what the "board certification" means.

In the United States there are several plastic surgery certifications: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS); the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS); and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Claims of board certification can be verified by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Be sure that the doctor is board certified specifically in the area of abdominoplasty plastic surgery.

In Canada make certain that the surgeon is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

To find a plastic surgeon that performs this procedure in your area, visit the online referral service of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). It is the largest plastic surgery organization in the world, and is the foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

All ASPS physicians are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

THE CONSULTATION PROCESS

Many plastic surgeons do not charge for the initial consultation. The surgeon will evaluate your medical history and ask about your health habits. Be as honest and upfront as possible in answering each question.

Be specific about what you want done, and what you hope to achieve. If your plastic surgeon fully understands your expectation, he or she will be able to determine whether or not your goals are realistic.

Tell the surgeon if you smoke, or have health or medical conditions or complications. The surgeon will ask you about you family medical history, especially your parents and siblings. He or she may want to run some tests to rule out certain diseases.

Ask questions and request specific, not vague, answers. If you have any concerns, share them. Discuss with the surgeon what procedure is right for you, and ask exactly what that procedure will entail.

TYPES OF ABDOMINOPLASTIES

There are two different types of abdominoplasties: the "mini-abdominoplasty," and the more invasive type, "abdominoplasty." Both these surgeries may involve liposuction. In both surgeries skin and fat are cut away from the abdomen.

In a mini-abdominoplasty an incision is made just above the pubic area; fat and excess skin is removed from the middle and lower abdomen. The navel is pulled lower to compensate for the stretching and removing of skin. Minimal or no abdominal tightening will be required. Recovery time is usually very quick.

A full abdominoplasty requires a much larger incision. Skin is separated from the abdominal wall, all the way up to the ribs. Muscles are sewn together to tighten them, and a significant amount of skin is removed, requiring the patient to be bent over for 10 to 14 days. Usually within 2 to 3 weeks the patient is able to resume normal activity, except for lifting. There should be no lifting or pushing, putting strain on the stomach muscles, for up to 2 months.

THE SURGERY ITSELF

Complete abdominoplasty usually takes 2 to 5 hours, depending upon the extent of the work needed. The surgeon will make a long incision from hipbone to hipbone, just above the pubic area. A second incision is made to free the navel from surrounding tissue.

The surgeon will separate the skin from the abdominal wall, lifting a large skin flap to expose the abdominal muscles. The muscles are sewn together to firm the abdominal wall and narrow the waistline. The skin flap will be stretched, and excess skin removed. A new opening will be cut for the navel, which will be stitched in place. Incisions will be stitched closed, and dressings will be applied. A temporary tube may be inserted to drain off excess fluid.

Partial abdominoplasty may take just over an hour or two. The incision is much shorter, and although it may be pulled into an unnatural shape once the skin is tightened and stitched, the navel usually does not require relocation. Both types of surgeries may require liposuction.

Surgeries for both types of procedures can be performed using either general or local anesthesia. When local anesthesia is used, you will be relaxed and pain free, but may feel some tugging or pulling. Depending upon your doctor, your surgery will be performed in either a hospital or an outpatient surgical center.

AFTER SURGERY

After the surgery you may be swollen and in pain, which can be controlled by medication. Depending upon the type of surgery performed, you may be released within a few hours, or remain hospitalized for up to 3 days. Your doctor will give you instructions in your post-operative care.

Although you might not be able to stand up straight, you should start walking as soon as possible to reduce the risk of blood clots. Surface stitches will be removed within a week; deeper sutures protruding through the skin will be removed in 2 - 3 weeks. The dressing on your incision may be replaced by a support garment.

It may take weeks, even months, to fully recover from surgery. The better your physical condition is prior to surgery, the shorter the expected recovery time. Some people return to work within a couple of weeks; other people can take up to a month to recover enough to return to work.

A low-impact exercise program, such as yoga, will help you heal faster, reduce swelling, tone the muscles, and lower your chances of blood clots. Getting plenty of rest and eating a healthy diet will also help you to heal faster.

A word about scarring: your scars may appear to worsen during the first three to six months. This is normal, and will be only temporary. Expect it to take several months or up to a full year for the scars to flatten, and lighten in color. While scars will not be noticeable under clothing, even when wearing a bathing suit, they will always be visible on the skin.

SUMMARY

In most cases the results of abdominoplasty are long lasting as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eat wisely, and get proper exercise. If you are realistic in your expectations and are prepared for a permanent scar and lengthy recovery time, chances are you will be very happy with the end result.

If you have large deposits of body fat in the stomach region that you want removed, or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise, abdominoplasty may just be the right choice for you. But you, and only you, should make that decision.

Visit Susan’s website A 2 Z of Health and Beauty for information on health and beauty, nutrition, fitness, skin care, weight loss and more. *** This article can be freely used as long as a link to "A 2 Z of Health and Beauty" http://health.learninginfo.org is provided.

A surgery really helps you to Change Your Look

A surgery really helps you to Change Your Look
Awinita Smith

If you are not happy with the way you look, dont worry solution is available for this problem. There are different types of cosmetic surgery, with some of the most popular being: breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, tummy tuck, nose surgery, facelift, eyelid surgery, Botox injections, facial implants, ear pinning, hair restoration, laser skin resurfacing, and laser hair removal.

Although these types of surgery can help you to look and feel better, you need to know that there are certain risks involved that come along with each one. Also it is important to consult with your doctor to find the particular procedure and these risks
Those are involved.

The following plastic surgery risks involve complications with anesthesia: abnormal heart rhythm, blood clots, airway obstruction, brain damage, heart attack, stroke, temporary paralysis, and even death. It is important to keep in mind that these plastic surgery risks are rare and there are a number of things that a good anesthesiologist can do to mitigate these plastic surgery risks.

Breast augmentation risks include sensory damage around the operation site, discoloration of the skin, tissue necrosis, asymmetry, infection, formation of scar tissue, and allergic reactions to sedation. Facial plastic surgery, on the other hand, can lead to noticeable tissue damage, unnatural looking features and premature aging.
The dangers of plastic surgery will increase or decrease depending on the type of surgery performed and the individual’s reaction to surgery and anesthesia. One of the most common dangers of plastic surgery that people considering surgery should be aware of is scarring. Most plastic surgeons attempt to hide incision lines in places where they can’t be seen, like under the crease of the breast in breast augmentation plastic surgery, or in the hairline in facial plastic surgery. Most surgeries will still result in permanent scarring, but the scarring is usually hidden from sight.

Some other dangers of plastic surgery are bleeding, infection, and blood clots. Close monitoring of the patient after surgery will allow these complications to be caught early on so they can be promptly treated. A high temperature is a sign of infection, and with the ease of temperature monitoring, it should be checked every few hours. Before you undergo plastic surgery it is important to have blood tests and a physical done to ensure that you are a good candidate for surgery. In addition you should make sure to look into the procedure you are considering and learn about the risks involved so that you can be as prepared inside and out for your transformation.

This article has been published by Awinita Smith whose specialization are in Health related topics and currently writing on Skin Treatment topics for http://www.skintreatmentweb.info. Dhanada S. Kulkarni

Life is choice. The events and experiences that occur throughout a person’s life constantly test her. People often respond to life’s circumstances by creating thoughts and actions that swing back and forth from high to low. Responding at the extremes creates stress and tension. People are always seeking information and answers outside of themselves, not realizing that all their answers are within. Yes!! Your guess is right. Working with Ayurveda and yoga is perhaps the easiest way for people to reconnect to their own energy within.
The principles of Ayurveda are an invaluable link to understanding, in detail, naturally healthy living. People everywhere are realizing the importance and benefits of taking personal responsibility for one's own well being, making Ayurveda the perfect system of health knowledge for today's world. Ayurveda literally means "science of life and longevity." and is considered to be the traditional system of medicine of India.

Ayurveda is a science in the sense that it is a complete system. It is a qualitative, holistic science of health and longevity, a philosophy and system of healing the whole person, body and mind. The origin of this system goes back to a far past, in which philosophy and medicine were not separated. Therefore, philosophical views have strongly influenced the Ayurvedic way of thinking
Ayurveda offers reference points for managing treatment decisions specific to each case. Ayurvedic theory is profoundly useful in analyzing individual patient constitution and understanding variations in disease manifestation.
The Ayurvedic framework can be used to structure working models of the unique state of each patient, and to project a vision or goal for a whole state of health, again unique to each case.
Ayurveda offers specific recommendations to each individual on lifestyle, diet, exercise and yoga, herbal therapy, and even spiritual practices to restore and maintain balance in body and mind. Ayurveda sees a strong connection between the mind and the body, a huge amount of information is available regarding this relationship. This understanding that we are all unique individuals enables Ayurveda to address not only specific health concerns but also offers explanation as to why one person responds differently than another.
So…. Welcome to read about the most ancient and traditional science on one of the most modern systems. How can this ancient system of health care be relevant to people of today, when technological advances have radically altered our lifestyles, our environment and our medicine?

This is one of the unique and miraculous stories of a fifty five years old and young hearted man. Wednesday 9th march 4 pm. A beautiful sunny day. Waiting in the reception area of a natural market and café 55 year old Mr. X at his cheek to clam a persistent twitch, a walker for support to walk. Minutes later, he and I sat together. It does not surprise or alarm me to hear that he is suffering from every conceivable problem from pain all over the body, weakness in the hands causing difficulty with gripping, pinching and buttoning, weakness of the wrist and finger muscles and atrophy of the quadriceps muscles in the legs. Atrophy or shrinking of the forearms was also noticeable.

A Healthy Solution on : inflammatory myopathy. (Inclusion Body Myosistis)

In world increasingly addicted to instant solutions, instant coffee, instant messaging, instant trading - He could have taken his pick of instant medications, painkillers, tranquilizers, sedatives, soporifics. Why is he seeing a Ayurvedic physician- Integrative Yoga Therapist instead? Perhaps because, like millions of other people, he has begun to realize that instant remedies are not worth the price you pay in side effects.

To vaidya (Ayurvedic Physician) knows that all his problem origins in one of three places:
his body, his mind and his spirit.

The first priority is to figure out the point of origin, then recommend simple ways to set him free of stress.

The advantage of this approach, “he was encouraged to become his own physician”.

Here is how we made this drugless journey healthy and successful.

Ayurvedic profile:
Doshas: The most fundamental and characteristic principle of Ayurveda is called "tridosha" or the Three Humours.Doshas are the physiological factors of the body. They are to be seen as all pervasive, subtle entities, and are categorized into vata, pitta and kapha. Vata regulates movement and is represented by the nervous system. Pitta is the principle of biotransformation and is the cause of all metabolic processes in the body. Kapha is the principle of cohesion and functions through the body fluids. Together, these three doshas determine the physiologic constitution of an individual

• Vata imbalance
• Imbalance of air and space
• Dry, cold, mobile, erratic
• Colon, pelvis, upper thighs, low back, and sacrum are the are affected by Vata imbalance
• Joints are dry and need moisture
• Constipation, frequency in urination
• Apan (Pelvic vata) and Saman (Diagestive vata) Vayu are affected

Vata: More severe pain. Bones can become weak and porous due to loss of moisture. Vata imbalance and vata is responsible for nervous system. Vata creates pain and pain feeds vata
Pitta: Inflammation with pain to all muscles. Nerve pain is more likely to be an issue for pitas. Inflamed ligaments. Gentle exercise, yoga nidra and poultice are recommended.
Kapha: Weakness of the muscles. More strenuous exercise is appropriate unless due to an injury to the vertebrae/disks.

For this Suggestion:
In Ayurvedic medicine, pain is generally attributed to a vata imbalance and treatment may involve detoxification, aromatherapy, grounding activities, and pranayama techniques.

Diet & Nutrition:
Vata balancing diet – oils, sweets (grains, fruits, dairy, nuts, honey), substantial foods (fish,
zucchini, dense foods) and spices with pungent tastes (onions, garlic, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, sage, thyme, cloves, mint)

Supplements & Herbs: Aswaghandha, yograj guggul, shilajit, punarnavdi guggul, nasya- vacha oil, Mahasudhrshan curna. Triphala, selium, flax seeds, castor oil, asfebida (hing), Guduchi.

Vitamins: Calcium, copper, Vitamin E, Thymus complex (glandular support), multi vitamin.
vitamin B6 +chromium+magnesium

Vata balancing diet
Vata balancing routines
Vata balancing herbs

Wellness Technique:

(A) Physical body:
• Nervous System – affected by muscle inflammation, pain and atrophy.
• Nerve/energy flow is blocked or limited by impingement of muscles.
• Nervous system sends a message from the site of injury, trauma or pain through spinal cord to the brain.
• Blood flow is compromised due to tightness of muscles and joints. Physical body includes muscles, ligaments, joints, pain, weakness, atrophy.
• Working on physical body in aspect of yogic and Vedic science is a major step towards understanding of all problems.
• Thinking of all conditions and choosing right therapies is the first key to unlock and open health magic box.

Exactly!!! We approached same -

• Body awareness- Scanning all over to know where is blocking
• Flow of energy through chakras, nadis and nerves. Balancing the chakras
• Yoga asanas: warm ups - shoulder/ neck movements, lateral stretches, hip circles (passive)
• Child pose with message: Constriction of legs increases blood circulation to vital organs. Diaphragmatic pressure increase oxygen percentage into blood through respiration. It has regulatory effect on endocrine system. It gets more blood to brain and pituitary gland. This makes child pose an extremely relaxing pose for quadricep muscles of legs.
• Prone extension: Lie on belly, stretch out through arms and legs with yogassage
• Supine knee to chest with message.
• Supine hamstring stretch with message
• Arm and legs rotations with the help of chair.
• Yoga postures that promote focus and strengthening without reproducing pain. For example, chair, warrior, cobra; also restorative postures emphasizing self-nurturing and care, relaxation, and stress reduction.

(B) Energy Body – Pranamayakosha

Breathing:

Eases pain instantaneously by breathing into tight, congested and painful muscles.
• Helps muscles relax - creating space
• Helps facilitate blood flow which brings nourishment and oxygen to the cells of the muscles involved.
• Increases the removal of toxins from the muscles.
• Engages the parasympathetic response which relaxes the body and quiets the Sympathetic nervous system (fights or flight response).
• Can release build up chronic tension.
• Breathing Technique – Breath in 4 counts and breath out in 8 counts i.e. 1:2 ratio and then
• Anulom and vilom breathing: Breath in through right nostril while left keep closed and again inhale through left nostril while right keep close. Repeating this cycles for at least 20 times makes beneficial effects on all muscles and vital organs.

(C) Psycho-emotional – Manamayakosha

• So-hum breathing and meditation.
• Mantra- AUM (om) chanting
• “What happens to the mind happens to the body. So, very simply, rigidity of the
Mind is equal to rigidity of the body.”

(Yoga for Back and Joint Disorders, Dr. P.S.Mamtora)

(D) Mantra:

• “OM GANG GANAPATYE NAMAHA”

- Salutation to Lord Ganesha who is the seed of wisdom and light.

• “My body and muscles are strong, my mind is wide, and I am protected and supported both inside and outside” – Gertrud Hirschi

In this article attempt has been made to represent Yoga and Ayurveda in its true spirit.
A case study on inflammatory myopathy - which is most vital in these days, has been presented. In this treatment painkiller, sedative, tranquilizers are traditionally used. We are correct in a sense, however these are both examples of acute dehydration.

You may be surprised to learn there is a far more widespread form — chronic dehydration — that we should all be concerned with.

So how do you know if you are chronically dehydrated? Again, many people have the belief that when they require fluids they will feel thirsty. Not so. By the time the mouth is dry and you feel thirsty, the body is well and truly dehydrated. You may also be surprised to know that a dry mouth is a sign of acute dehydration. You have gone beyond chronically dehydrated by that point.

The body is a smart system though, and before you reach the point of dry mouth, the body will give signs as it begins the process of redistributing the available water. When the body is in a state of chronic dehydration, then fatigue/energy loss, constipation, digestive disorders, high and low blood pressure, stomach ulcers, respiratory troubles, acid/alkaline imbalance, excess weight and obesity, eczema, cholesterol, urinary infections, rheumatism and premature aging will take place. I can (and will) write an article on each of these problems, but they are all caused by being chronically dehydrated. Any way you look at it, having to go to the bathroom more than once a day is a small price to pay for feeling great and being healthy.

The human body consists of 70% water, the brain consists of 80% water, the blood consists of 90% water. Let’s face it, we rely on water as the basis of our existence — not soda, or juice or coffee, tea and beer. We need to ingest water in its purest form, free from any chemicals in order for our cells to remain hydrated and our body systems functioning as they should.

How much water do you need? The best way to calculate your daily water intake is to take half your weight in pounds and convert it to ounces. If you weigh 160 lbs and work in an office, then 80 oz of water throughout the day is what you need to be drinking. If you are working strenuously outdoors in a hot climate, then you would need more. It should seem like you are constantly going to the bathroom and your urine should be clear. This is how you know you are properly hydrated. Every night you sweat as you sleep, so you need to repeat the same process every day of every month of every year you are on the planet.

We know that a 1% loss of total body weight in water will result in a 10% loss in physical ability. When you consider at a temperature of 82 fa, water loss is 3 liters an hour, or more than 4% of total body weight, that means we can expect a 40% loss in physical ability. If you are working in that temperature, it increases. I don’t know about you, but there are a lot of places I’ve lived that get to 100. In such warm environments, you need even more water to stay hydrated. For your physical and mental well being, it certainly pays to consider both the quality and quantity of the water you drink.

Are you hungry or thirsty?

If we need water, we can either ingest liquid or we can ingest food with water content. Our bodies will settle for either, but it is usually the food we go for instead of the liquid. Yes, in many cases, we mistake hunger for thirst, eating as much food as we need in order to get the water our body requires. The result of this is added stored fat — assuming the foods consumed are processed or take away as most busy people are inclined to eat. And the more you eat — you guessed it — the more water you need to digest and eliminate waste from your body.

Our bodies are made of water and without it, we are lucky to survive 3 days. Despite this, so many of us live our lives with uncomfortable medical problems such as constipation, simply because we don’t drink enough water. Einstein once said, “insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting different results.” So, do it. Drink more water. Hydrate your cells. They will be happy and you will also be happy as a result.

Matt Canham runs http://Kangen-water.ws, a site dedicated to information about staying alkaline, hydrated and free from disease.

Allergic Food Reactions

by: Wong Lai Teng

The topic of allergic food reactions is undoubtedly one of the most confused of clinical immunology. The term ‘allergic’ is frequently used inappropriately to describe all conditions where reproducible reactions are triggered by food ingestions, disappear on an elimination diet and recur on a blind challenge. ‘Food intolerance’ is the appropriate term to define the entirety of these conditions.

Allergic food reactions should be confined to those cases where an immune mechanism can be demonstrated. Most instances of food intolerance are not explained by a clear immunological mechanism, being caused by toxics (spices, sulphites) and pharmacological (caffeine, sodium nitrite) stimuli or by enzymatic deficiencies (lactose deficiency in some cases of milk intolerance). In these non-immune food reactions, however, many of the manifestations may be accounted for by activation of the alternative complement pathway. It is postulated that this pathway is triggered by non-immune stimuli such as food contaminants, leading to formation of anaphylotoxins such as C5a.

In the first year of life, food intolerance is relatively common, with cow’s milk being the most frequent initiating stimulus. It appears as gastrointestinal symptoms and possibly wheezing. In adults the foods most frequently involved in intolerance are milk, eggs, fish, nuts, wheat and chocolate. These food reactions frequently have an allergic pathogenesis. Symptoms include urticaria, angioedema, asthma, anaphylaxis and less frequently, nausea and vomiting. Such manifestations, but even more those comprising the oral allergy syndrome-swelling of the lips within minutes of food ingestions and tingling in the mouth and the throat-closely correlate with the presence of specific IgE and implicate a type I hypersensitivity as the mechanism responsible for the clinical manifestations.

Involvement of type I hypersensitivity can be documented by the detection of specific IgE using the RAST or, less expensively, with a skin prick test. The prick test, unfortunately, is only as good as the antigen it uses. Therefore, while antigenic preparations from eggs, milk or shellfish may provoke a positive skin reaction in sensitized individuals, highly purified preparations from apple are rarely do, even if a hypersensitive subject gives strikingly positive reactions when challenged with cruder preparations from apple juice or apple peel. The main diagnostic procedure in food intolerance is an elimination diet from which suspect foods are gradually removed until symptoms disappear. A positive diagnosis is made when symptoms reappear upon reintroducing a specific food. This challenge should be done in a double-blind manner using placebo controls. The challenge should be avoided, however, if the food is suspected to have caused systemic anaphylaxis in the past.

Advices from Medical Specialist for Those Who Have Nasal Problem

Alexander Chong

Aaron had a bad sinus infection after returning from oversea. He said he always had a sinus problems and rhinitis, but never asked advices from any medical specialist. This time, the infection was so bad that he had to consult ear, nose and throat specialist. This trip to the specialist is very valuable because the specialist gave him a lot of daily useful tips, which help him to recover from his infection and also teach him how to prevent infections in the future. According to him, the specialist not only gives him antibiotics but also advices how to avoid habits that will further irritate his nasal membranes. Added by Aaron are fragile and sensitive nasal membranes may be irritated by simple things such as sniffing and blowing the nose too hard, coughing too hard, rubbing nose and stuffing things such as tissues and handkerchiefs up to the nostrils.

Other good habits that had been recommended by his specialist are getting enough sleep and emptying half the stomach before sleep to avoid refluxing (back up) stomach acids, which will irritate the nose membranes. Besides these, his specialist also told him that for a person who had flu (infection) should not dive and swim. This is because diving and swimming may cause the infection in the nose traveling up to the sinuses through the water, where this person swim in.

Nasal and sinus diseases caused by infections or allergies are the common symptoms that lead people to the consultation of ear, nose and throat specialist. According to ear, nose and throat specialist, airborne particles or air pollution from the environment can cause nasal and sinus diseases. However, for those who have family history of an allergic nose, they have higher possibility inheriting allergic disorders. Ear, nose and throat specialist noted that the people who came to see him mostly had symptoms such as runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing and sensitive nose, eyes and throat. Some of them may come with loss of smell. Specialist explained that if nose infections were left untreated or poorly handled, it can cause problems to the sinuses, eyes, throat and lungs. Cavities surrounding the nose are known as sinuses. Your sinus can be infected from a simple nose infection. Since the eyes are located close to the sinuses, it can be infected too. Specialist added that the lungs infection caused by the nose infection was the excessive mucous secreted from the nose flown into the throat and further gone deep into the lungs. However, by staying away from the allergen, which is a substance that triggers allergy, one person's nose allergies can be reduced.

According to specialist, to clean your nose by sniffing, blowing or picking your nose is not the right way when you had a flu or allergy. The following tips have been given by the specialist for you to care for your nose. The most common cause of nasal problems is allergy, which medical term is allergic rhinitis.

To get rid of the allergic triggered substances is the best way to prevent these symptoms. One of the allergic triggered substances is dust mites. Due to their occupying in mattresses, carpets and pillows, runny nose and sneezing in the morning are caused by them. Nevertheless, medications such as acaricides can be used to destroy dust mites. Besides this, dust mites can be kept away by using medication impregnated bed sheets. Once a week, put your bed sheets and pillows under that sun is a more economical way. Your bedroom has to be mopped and cleaned it using vacuum regularly. The load of dust mites can be reduced using these simple methods; however, it is not an easy task to totally eradicate dust mites. To check whether some of the common allergens out there are the cause of your allergy, you can take blood and skin tests to confirm it. Prevent the foods that cause your allergy for a period of time before retry them again if you have allergy to foods. Sometimes, some people allergies can be got over with time. If pets cause your allergy, try to remove them. Allergic reactions may be caused by fungus in the air-conditioning and ventilation vents. To solve this problem, just use fungicides, which are the chemicals that can kill fungus to clean the systems.

Bad habits such as sniffing, blowing or picking your nose will exasperate or extend the infection to surrounding organs during an infection period. Your symptoms may aggravate if you drink cold drinks. Therefore, you should take warm drinks instead of cold drinks. You should not blow your nose too hard when you have runny nose. Nose blocked is due to the swollen lining tissue inside the nasal cavity. Hence, blowing your nose hard is not going to clear the mucous. Moreover, it will cause the infection to go to the surrounding areas such as sinuses and ears. The proper way is sniffing gently to bring the mucous down to the throat and after that spit or cough it out from the mouth. You should not teach your children how to blow their nose if they don't know how to do it. So, if they have any discharge, just use handkerchief or tissue to wipe their nose gently. Mucous or phlegm should not be swallowed because it may cause irritation to your stomach.

Anybody can have nosebleeds at any age. Nosebleeds in children are mostly due to the damage of the blood vessels in the anterior part of their nose. This is due to their bad habit - like to pick at their nose. Apply pressure on the bleeding nostril for a few minutes and use the other nostril or mouth to breathe temporarily if you have nosebleed. Don't hold your head back because this will cause the blood drip down into your throat. Instead hold your head up straight and sit up. You may unaware that you are actually still bleeding if you hold you head back. This is because the blood dripping down through your throat but not trickling down from your nostrils. Consequently, it may cause a breathing difficulty because your airways may be blocked by the bleeding. Ice can be used to apply on your nose if the nosebleed doesn't stop. Nosebleeds in adults can be caused by infection or tumors in their nose. Other factors that will cause nosebleeds are high blood pressure and the hardening of the blood vessels in the nose. Both diseases are due to ageing. Therefore, you need to check with doctors to double confirm what is the problem with your nose if it is bleeding.

Alexander Chong Author of "How to cure your incurable nasal allergy without using any synthetic drugs, herbs and expensive devices". http://www.cure-nasal-allergy.com/article9.htm

Keeping Dust Under Control with a Dust Spray

by: Vincent

For those with allergies or asthma, keeping dust under control is essential to overall health. It is also a good idea for those without any health problems and a buildup of dust can cause cold-like symptoms if breathed in too much. Additionally, too much dust attracts other nuisances such as dust mites, which live in dust and can spread to other parts of your home. A dust spray can help prevent dust from flying around in the air as you clean, making cleanup much more effective and sanitary. Dust mites do not simply live in the layer of dust across the uppermost shelf in your home.

They also live in bedding, couches, carpet, stuffed toys and old clothing, and are similar in appearance to spiders or ticks--although they cannot be seen by the naked eye. There are two types of dust mites, American and European house dust mites. As you may know, much of what we see as dust is actually dead skin that we people shed on a regular basis. Dust mites feed off of dead skin and other organic materials in dust. You may have dust mites and not know it--only people who are allergic will react to dust mites. Dust mites also shed their skin, and people who are allergic react to this dead skin and dust mite feces. Reactions can range from a runny nose to a severe asthma attack. Dust mites can be difficult to get rid of, and they prefer humid environments, so avoid using humidifiers if you have a dust mite problem. For people with sever reactions, measures that are more drastic may be required, such as encasing bedding in plastic covers and removing draperies. For those with less serious reactions, a regular control program can make a big difference. Using a spray for dust mites is one method to keep the problem under control. Dust spray binds the dust, making it easier to clean and remove. It can also be used on multiple surfaces, such as floors, shelves, furniture, window blinds, lamps, picture frames, and more. Dust mite spray allows you to clean all over the house and reduce the chances of dust mites spreading. Because dust spray helps keep dust "together," it can be used with a wide range of dusting tools, which makes cleaning easier because you can use a long-handled duster in combination with a dust spray and not worry about the dust falling back to the floor. Instead, it will be trapped in the duster by the dust spray. Be sure to clean your dusting tools effectively, particularly if you have a dust mite problem and are using a dust mite spray. After dusting, take the tools outside away from the house. Give the tools a good shake to remove the dust from the tool. Avoid banging the tools on the wall or concrete, as this can damage them. Depending on the tool you use, you may be able to wash the duster. Using a dust spray in combination with a synthetic duster can be a great solution to a dust mite problem. A spray for dust mites binds the dust, and the synthetic cleaner can be washed afterward with warm, soapy water. Be sure to store your dusters in a way that keeps pressure off the dusting head, as this can damage them. Dust spray also works great with dusting cloths, and these can be machine washed afterward. Even when using a dust spray, it is a good idea to use top-down cleaning. Start with the uppermost areas and work your way down. This way, should any dust float downward, you can "catch" it as you work from the upper shelves or taller furniture down to the lower shelves and furniture. To minimize "losing" some dust, spray your tool directly with the dust spray rather than spraying the furniture directly. The pressure from the sprayer can blow dust away on furniture, but this will not happen when spraying the cleaning tool. To keep dust and dust mites under control, dust with a dust spray every time. Even if there is no visible dust, that does not mean it is not there. Dust mites cannot be seen by the naked eye, so regular cleaning is essential. Also, consider using other preventative measures such as an indoor air filter. A filtered vacuum can also help keep the problem under control. Solomom, MD

OVERUSE OF ANTIBIOTICS

We are overusing antibiotics so that bacterial resistance is becoming a significant threat. The CDC has estimated that treatment of infections due to resistant bacteria costs more than $4 billion annually. There are many factors associated with increasing resistance.
• Increased antimicrobial use in the community and hospital
– Increase in empiric antibiotics
– Prolonged and broad-spectrum antibiotic courses
– Repeated antibiotic courses
• Prolonged Hospitalizations
• Severely ill patient status
• Immunocompromised state
• Increase use of intravascular devices and catheters

• Inadequate infection control procedures
• Antibiotic use in animals and agriculture

The medical community can help curb this problem by offering the patient narrow spectrum or older antibiotics, shorter duration of therapy when appropriate and manipulating the dose of antibiotics. Perhaps even more importantly, doctors need to educate their patients regarding the risk of using antibiotics and spend more time discussing prevention. Patients would be wise to ask if there are any other options to consider, if watchful waiting is an option and if the antibiotic is specific for the condition.
Together, we can reduce this significant threat of bacterial resistance.

Hana R. Allergic rhinitis is a reaction to seasonal airborne allergens. It affects about 7 percent of the population of North America and is a risk factor for 88 percent of asthma patients. We have some excellent prescription medications for treating this, and there are many over-the-counter medications available also. However, BEWARE of the sedating effects of those nonprescription medications!!! Recent studies have shown that an individual on a therapeutic dose of diphenhydramine (Benedryl) is a more dangerous driver than one who is legally drunk on alcohol.

Fortunately, there are also some effective alternative therapies for allergic rhinitis.

Remember: no matter what method you use to treat your allergies, nasal rinsing to clear the mucus membranes of trapped allergens is essential. It only takes about 30 seconds, doesn't hurt a bit when done correctly, and makes all the difference. I recommend Nasopure®, a product developed by Dr. Hana Solomon, a pediatrician who has put together in one simple kit all you need for successful nasal rinsing. There is an excellent article about this on the Nasopure website (www.nasopure.com). If you are regularly using your Nasopure®, and still having difficulties, you can try some of the following remedies without significant side effects.

Vitamin and mineral supplements:

*    Vitamin A - 10,000 IU/day

*    Vitamin B6 - 50-100 mg/day

*    Vitamin B5 - 50-75 mg/day

*    Vitamin C - 1,000 mg/day in 3 divided doses

*    Vitamin E - 400 IU/day

*    Zinc - 20-30 mg/day

In addition some herbs and nutrients can help:

Quercetin has anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory effects if you take it 250mg two or three times a day.

Freeze-dried stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) can relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis at a dosage of 300mg twice a day.

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), also called fish oil, can help asthma patients with allergies by stabilizing the airways. They come in capsules and the total dose of the combination should be 2-4 g/day.

Acupuncture has given many patients significant relief. The Chinese medicine paradigm is very different than Western medicine, so I can not explain the mechanism of action. WATER
* Transports other nutrients to cells, carries wastes away, aids digestion and more. It makes up more than half your weight.
* SOURCES: water; juices and other beverages; soups and many "solid" foods (fruits, vegetables, breads, etc.).

2. MINERALS
* Build bones, teeth, blood, and help the body use energy.
* Especially important to young people:
* CALCIUM: found is the milk/dairy group and in some green vegetables.
* IRON: found in lver, kidney and lean meats, shellfish, dried beans and peas, dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, etc.), egg yolks and dried fruits.

3. PROTEINS
* Build and repair cells, fight infection, and make blood strong. These body builders are made up of amino acids. ("Complete" proteins have all 8 amino acids that the human body needs.)
* SOURCES OF COMPLETE PROTEINS: fish, meat, chicken, eggs, milk, and soy beans.
* SOURCES OF INCOMPLETE PROTEINS: dried beans, lentils and peas, nuts, breads, noodles, grains and cereals. Foods missing different amino acids can sometimes be combined to provide the amino acids for a complete protein.

4. VITAMINS
* Help the body use food and work properly. They're found in all foods from the 4 food groups.
* ESPECIALLY GOOD SOURCES: carrots, spinach, broccoli, green peppers, leaf lettuce, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes, whole and enriched grains, milk products, fish, meat, and poultry.

5. CARBOHYDRATES
* Provide energy (calories) for muscles, nerves, and the brain. "Complex" carbohydrate foods provide calories and other nutrients. (An added plus - they're also sources of fibre, essential for digestion and the prevention of some disseases.) "Simple" carbohydrate foods provide calories, but not much else. (That's why they're often called "empty calories.")
* SOURCES OF COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATE: ("starches"): breads, noodles, grains, cereals, potatoes, nuts, seeds, dried beans, lentils and peas, vegetables, and some fruits.
* SOURCES OF SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES: table sugar, powdered sugar, brown sugar and "natural" sugars in honey, corn, and some fruits.

6. FAT
* Provides energy and "fatty acids," and helps digestion. Too much fat can be harmful.
* SOURCES: vegetable oils, margarine, butter (and foods fried in them); whole milk, cream, most cheeses; meats, poultry (with skin), eggs; chocolate, avacadoes, peanut butter, and nuts.

10 Tips To Healthy Eating And Physical Activity

1. Start Your Day With Breakfast
Breakfast fills your "empty tank" to get you going after a long night without food. Eating a good breakfast can help you do better in school. Easy to prepare breakfasts include: cold cereal with fruit and low-fat milk, whole-wheat toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit, whole-grain waffles or even last night's pizza.

2. Get Moving
It's easy to fit physical activities into your daily routine. Walk, bike or jog to see your friends. Take a 10 minute activity break every hour while you read, do homework or watch TV. Climb stairs instead of taking an escalator or elevator. Try to do these things for a total of 30 minutes every day.

3. Snack Smart
Snacks are a great way to refuel. Choose snacks from different food groups - a glass of low-fat milk and a few graham crackers, an apple or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, or some dry cereal. If you eat smart at other meals, cookies, chips, and candy are okay for occasional snacking.

4. Work up a sweat
Vigorous work-outs, when you're breathing hard and sweating, help your heart pump better, give you more energy and help you look and feel your best. Start with a warm-up that stretches your muscles. Include 20 minutes of aerobic activity, such as running, jogging or dancing. Follow-up with activities that help make you stronger such as push-ups or lifting weights. Then cool-down with more stretching and deep breathing.

5. Balance your food choices - don't eat too much of one thing
You don't have to give up foods like hamburgers, french fries, and ice cream to eat healthfully. You just have to be smart about how often and how much of them you eat. Your body needs nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat, and many different vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and A, iron, and calcium from a variety of foods.

6. Get fit with friends or family
Being active is much more fun with friends or family. Encourage others to join you and plan one special physical activity event, like a bike ride or hiking, with a group each week.

7. Eat more grains, fruits, and vegetables
These foods give you carbohydrates for energy, plus vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Besides, they taste good! Try breads such as whole-wheat, bagels, and pita. Spaghetti and oatmeal are also in the grain group.

8. Join in physical activities at school
Whether you take a physical education class or do other physical activities at school, such as intramural sports, structured activities are a sure way to feel good, look good and stay physically fit.

9. Foods aren't good or bad
A healthy eating style is like a puzzle with many parts. Each part, or food, is different. Some foods may have more fat, sugar or salt, while others may have more vitamins or fibre. There is a place for all these foods. What makes a diet good or bad is how foods fit together. Balancing your choices is important. Fit in a higher-fat food, like pepperoni pizza, at dinner by choosing lower-fat foods at other meals. And don't forget about moderation. If two pieces of pizza fill you up, don't eat a third.

10. Make healthy eating and physical activities fun!
Take advantage of physical activities you and your friends enjoy doing together and eat the foods you like. Be adventurous - try new sports, games, and other activities as well as new foods. You'll grow stronger, play longer, and look and feel better! Set realistic goals - don't try changing too much at once.

Madelon L.Finkel - Truth, Lies, and Public Health

Madelon L.Finkel - Truth, Lies, and Public Health

INFO : The “politicalization” of research findings has become prevalent over the past two decades.
Politics often prevents the implementation of policy supported by irrefutable science.

Most of us understand something about how this is happening with stem cell research, but Cornell’s Madelon Finkel delves deep into the subject to make the issues clear, also revealing how ideology and politics are distorting, diminishing, and destroying scientific research results regarding topics from needle exchange to medical marijuana use and HIV/AIDS prevention. When ideology–whether it is the ideology of scientists and clinicians or of politicians–distorts scientific findings and public health judgment, public welfare is endangered, potentially affecting every person in our nation. Finkel also discusses how research is funded and how ideology has influenced that process.

Numerous examples are given to illustrate the consequences of co-opting the scientific integrity of a program in this way. This can cause that part of the brain to be damaged, and you may losecontrol of a function that is controlled by that part of the brain. Forexample, you could lose the use of an arm or leg, or the ability to speak. The damage can be temporary or permanent, partial or complete. Doctors havefound that if you get treatment right away after symptoms start, there is abetter chance of getting the blood moving to your brain, and less chance of damage.

How do I know if I'm having a stroke ?
If you have any of the following symptoms, call for emergency helpimmediately. The sooner you get help, the more doctors can do to preventfurther or permanent damage.
* Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg on one side of thebody
* Sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye
* Loss of speech, trouble talking or understanding what others are saying
* Sudden severe headache with no known cause
* Unexplained dizziness, unstable walking or falling, especially along withany of the other symptoms

Another warning sign of a stroke is called a transient ischemic attack(TIA). A TIA is a "mini-stroke" that can cause the symptoms listed aboveand may only last a few minutes, but should not be ignored. People who havea TIA are at greater risk of having a stroke later. Call your doctorimmediately if you think you are having a TIA.

Risk factors for a stroke
* Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
* Uncontrolled diabetes* High blood pressure
* High cholesterol level* Smoking
* Previous transient ischemic attack (TIA)
* Heart disease
* Carotid artery disease (the artery that carries blood to your brain)

How can I avoid having a stroke ?
Talk to your family doctor about your risk factors for a stroke and how toreduce your risk. Here are some other things you can do to avoid having astroke :
* If your blood pressure is high, follow your doctor's advice to control it.
* Avoid foods that are high in fat and cholesterol, and eat less sodium(salt), to lower your cholesterol and blood pressure.
* If you have diabetes, keep your blood sugar level under control.
* Limit how much alcohol you drink.
* Quit smoking. If you don't smoke, don't start.

Ask your doctor for advice on making these lifestyle changes, and askfriends and family for support. Regular checkups are important to findproblems that can increase your risk of having a stroke. Talk to your doctorabout whether taking aspirin in low doses would help reduce your risk ofstroke or TIA. Aspirin can help keep your blood from forming clots that caneventually block the arteries.
